GREEN. SAFE. SMART!
WJC Sustainable Cities Conference 2022
Following the tremendous success of GS2.2020, The University of the West Indies, Mona - Western Jamaica Campus is set to host its second Caribbean Sustainable Cities Conference from November 16 - 18, 2022 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
This biennial affair retains its original theme Go Green. Go Safe. Go Smart (GS2) and seeks to bring together urban and rural planners, environmentalists, policymakers, academics, researchers, and students to critically reflect on the Caribbean’s experience in attaining the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities.
The three thematic areas captured in the GS2 sub-title – Environmental Sustainability, Safety and Security, and Technological Transformation – highlight the mutual relationship between climate action (SDG 13) and realizing peaceful and inclusive societies (SDG16). But they also reinforce the critical role of digital transformation in the realization of sustainable cities and communities, and in ensuring good health and well-being (SDG 3).
We remain conscious of the unprecedented global impact of COVID -19 and how, especially for small-island developing States, underlying inequities within our social, political and economic arrangements have intensified matters of sustainability and resilience at all levels of our cities and communities. We are even more cognizant of the need for rapid and fundamental shifts in our thinking and approach to digital transformation and the centrality of digital technology in achieving desired sustainability in all dimensions.
So while we are eager to see the back of the pandemic, we are also aware of both the residual anxieties and the rising spirit of adaptability among our people. As new norms emerge, we are resolute in our responsibility as guardians of public health and safety in embedding the required public health policies, standards, and procedures in our planning and implementation of GS2.2022.
Transforming responsibly.

ABOUT
The University of the West Indies, Mona - Western Jamaica Campus will host the biennial Caribbean Sustainable Cities Conference - Go Green. Go Safe. Go Smart (GS2) in the city of Montego Bay, Jamaica in November 2022.
The conference aims to critically reflect on the Caribbean’s attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. The three thematic areas captured in the GS2 sub-title are Environmental Sustainability, Safety and Security, and Technological Transformation.
More specifically, the theme for GS2.2022 is, Adaptability and resilience – Technological transformation driving change and sustainability in communities and cities.
Especially in the context of the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the theme for this year focuses on the centrality of digital technology to the navigation of our educational, health, social and economic realities.
The plenaries, concurrent sessions and technical presentations will seek to build on the fundamental question: What is the nexus between ensuring good health and well-being (SDG 3), climate action (SDG 13), protecting our terrestrial ecosystems (SDG15) and realizing peaceful and inclusive societies (SDG16) as the region responds to the global trend towards technologically defined SMART city designations?
The three-day affair is opened to planners, environmentalists, academics, researchers, policymakers, students, and all parties interested in realizing peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable cities, especially in Small Island Developing States like the Caribbean.
